When I was living full-time out West, the Zumba® classes I took before I became a Zumba Instructor were always about one-third men and two-thirds women. I assumed that was normal until I started spending time in Tampa.
There a funny thing happened, there were no men in any of my Zumba classes, and once I started teaching my own, I only stumbled upon two of them. In taking one of my ZIN Jammer classes (an instructional class for Zumba Instructors only), we had one male instructor out of 30 attending.
Frankly I'm puzzled. There are many men who go out dancing, so why not Zumba? The creator of Zumba, is male for goodness sakes (Beto Perez)!
If you're a man who likes music and likes to move, you'll like Zumba. They've even designed Zumba clothing just for men. And with the ability to burn 400 - 800 calories per hour depending on your metabolism and effort, most men could use that kind of calorie-torching ability to their workout regimen. In fact, it may be a way for a guy who's become a couch potato to re-join the world of the active and fit. Just like many women who don't think of doing any other type of group exercise or gym workout will do Zumba, I'm guessing the same would hold true for men.
3 Ways To Get Men To Zumba Class
1. Couples Night Out
The two guys I've had in my Zumba classes were husbands who tried it with their wives. One bailed after the first time (as did she)--their loss; one couple stayed with it (although the husband doesn't come to every class with his wife). So I suggest wives and girlfriends, bring your husbands and boyfriends.
2. How To Meet Someone
Single? Well, while we don't want to turn Zumba class into a "meet market", since the best case scenario I've seen in a Zumba class is that you'd be outnumbered 2:1, maybe you'll meet someone.
3. Moms Don't Discrimimate Against The Males In Your Family
And Moms, I've seen lots of you bring your daughters to class, and in some cases your own Moms--how about your sons or Dads? Why not? I take teens 14+ in my adult classes, and chances are your own instructor may do the same.
Zumba is a fantastic workout that feels like anything but. And it's for women AND men. Join us!
